Enter values in the UTM or the MGRS fields and click the associated "Convert"
button: the equivalents will be filled in the other fields
Notes
* MGRS and USNG are essentially the same. My Web page
UTM and MGRS has detailed info of the differences at
MGRS and the USNG
In the above the MGRS values are displayed with spaces to assist legibility. This is valid for USNG, but
to conform with the standard representations of MGRS all these spaces should be removed
When converting from MGRS to UTM the UTM coordinates of the SW corner of the given square are returned
When converting from UTM to MGRS the MGRS square is given which contains the given UTM reference. If the
UTM is on the boundary of two or more MGRS squares, either(any) of the adjacent squares may be returned,
depending on rounding error
It follows from the above that if you use the convertor to translate from MGRS to UTM and back again,
you may finish up in a square adjacent to the one you started in. This is not necessarily an error in the convertor:
it merely reflects a fundamental problem in conversion between MGRS and UTM. I have, however, done my best
to try and stop it happening.
USNG not defined outside the latitude range 80°S and 84°N. Outside this range MGRS is defined,
but not directly in terms of UTM. In either case the results given by this convertor are then meaningless.
This convertor was written as a "how to do it" example: see Program Notes
for a detailed discussion of the program
